For one remarkable day, this suite became another country

In 1945, the birth of Crown Prince Alexander transformed the Prince Alexander Suite into Yugoslavian territory, when Sir Winston Churchill declared the land beneath his bed sovereign soil. Today, that extraordinary moment forms part of the enduring story of the space, one of Mayfair’s most historic suites.

Designed by Michelle Wu, its interiors honour a remarkable legacy, creating an extraordinary place to gather and celebrate. Gold leaf traces the ceiling and wall mouldings; hand-embroidered silks, velvets and French-inspired detailing sit alongside beautifully restored furnishings; and crystal chandeliers, marble fireplaces and sweeping bay windows give the principal rooms a luminous sense of history: one that never overwhelms the comfort of the present.

An original Gilbert & Sullivan piano forms a natural centre of gravity, inviting music into family gatherings and private evenings alike. The dining room continues this sense of occasion, its curved walls and restored table beckoning celebrations, whether marking a special birthday or welcoming friends and family. Beyond, Mayfair continues life apace, while guests continue to write one of Claridge’s most remarkable stories.
