ESG AT The Maybourne Riviera

Suspended above the Côte d’Azur, The Maybourne Riviera is an architectural marvel perfectly positioned near Monaco. Inspired by the region’s modernist architecture, maritime culture and artistic legacy, each space has been individually crafted by world-renowned designers and creatives.

Alongside its design excellence and luxurious guest experience, The Maybourne Riviera is deeply committed to reducing its environmental impact and supporting its people and local communities.

Guided by a dedicated ESG lead and active committee that meets regularly, the hotel has made significant progress this year implementing innovative sustainability initiatives. This ongoing work has been recognised with an ‘ESG Excellent’ rating in our latest ESG audit conducted by sustainability consultancy, Sustainable Advantage.

    Inclusion, Wellbeing And Engagement

Wellbeing is a core part of the one-to-one conversations held between team members and their managers, ensuring everyone feels supported throughout the year. Colleagues also benefit from a suite of health and wellbeing initiatives, including a highly valued on-site osteopath service and a private health insurance plan, half of which is subsidised by the hotel.

We also place strong emphasis on employee recognition. ‘Employee of the Month’ vouchers, seasonal awards and a programme of social events all contribute to a positive and supportive workplace culture.

We actively encourage our team to share their ideas and help shape the future of the hotel.

In 2025, we achieved an outstanding 92% completion rate in our annual survey, surpassing our ambitious 90% target.

      People

      Training and Development

Last year we held a dedicated training week ahead of the season for all department heads. This was coupled with an ‘Insight’ workshop exploring personality types to help strengthen collaborative working.

2026 sees the launch of our new e-learning platform, which will significantly expand the learning and development opportunities available to our colleagues and support continuous professional growth.

        Pay

        People

To ensure pay fairness across all roles, a formal gender-equality framework is in place, with the professional equality index calculated annually. This is supported by an action plan that includes, for example, systematic pay adjustments for women returning from maternity leave.

        Health and Safety

        People

The hotel operates a comprehensive risk-management framework that is continually reviewed to identify and reduce potential health and safety risks.

A structured accident-reporting and incident-management system ensures swift action whenever issues arise. Furthermore, colleagues receive regular training to keep standards front of mind.

        Planet

        Biodiversity

The land around the hotel is home to 33 protected species, including reptiles, birds, bats and a variety of plant life. To safeguard these species, we have introduced three categories of targeted measures:

        1. Reduction measures: which include avoiding construction near identified nests, using wide-mesh trellises, adapting work schedules to minimise disturbance to wildlife and limiting artificial lighting.

        2. Compensation measures: which focus on restoring and enhancing habitats that support local species.

        3. Accompanying measures: such as relocating certain species when necessary, installing bat houses and rehabilitating and maintaining hillside terraces.

As part of our commitment to protecting and enhancing the natural environment surrounding the hotel, we maintain a rigorous programme of biodiversity monitoring and action. Regular audits scrutinise our measures and produce detailed reports that contain useful recommendations for improvement.

Over the past year, the hotel has invested €40,000 in the installation of bat houses and a further €13,000 in ongoing wildlife maintenance, reinforcing our long-term commitment to biodiversity stewardship.

          Energy and Carbon

          Planet

We have calculated our carbon emissions, identifying key reduction opportunities and, together with the other Maybourne hotels, we are committed to achieving Net Zero emissions by 2045.

Under the Tertiary Decree (Décret Tertiaire), the hotel has developed an energy reduction plan targeting a 40% cut in consumption by 2030.

To help achieve this, recent energy reduction measures include:

          • Installing heat-reflective window films to cut heating and cooling demand

          • Upgrading our Building Management System (BMS) to optimise and reduce hotel energy use

In addition, our electricity supply is sourced primarily from nuclear energy, a zero-carbon source.

          Reducing Plastic

          Planet

We have worked hard to eliminate as much plastic as possible from the hotel. Sustainable packaging is now a core principle of our purchasing policy and a key consideration when selecting suppliers.

Spa and toiletry products used in guest rooms and treatment areas are refillable and we have introduced plastic-free, disposable flip-flops which are delivered to guests in paper bags.

A water dispenser and cardboard cups have been installed in the spa, while the gym now offers water in fully recyclable cardboard bottles.
