Summer exhibition

Summer Exhibition

[Expect] floor-to-ceiling art by greats and unknowns alike.

Time Out

The art and soul of London

Prints to paintings, sculpture to photography, the Royal Academy’s annual Summer Exhibition is the oldest – and largest – open submission exhibition in the world. Since 1769 it has attracted artists from the emerging to the established, showcasing works that span the full breadth of creative disciplines.

Over 1000 pieces are carefully selected by a committee of Royal Academicians, artists and architects, to create an on-the-pulse survey of the art world. And from its origins as an arena for Gainsborough, Turner and Constable to pit their palettes against one another, the Summer Exhibition has since seen works by contemporary greats including David Hockney RA, Tracey Emin and Wim Wenders.

Creating new connections

This year sees celebrated British painter, David Remfry RA, act as exhibition coordinator, bringing eclectic creations together in an exploration of E.M. Forster’s famous quote of ‘Only Connect’, from Howards End. A number of works will be available to purchase, and the whole collection can also be viewed online via the Summer Exhibition Explorer.
