Cars: Accelerating The Modern World
The driving force for change
If I had asked people what they wanted, they would have said faster horses.
Exploring the tensions and triumphs of car design and manufacture over the last 130 years, this is a unique car exhibition held at the world’s leading museum of art and design.
Seeing cars at the V&A may strike some as a little out of place among the elegant sculptures, ceramics and textiles the museum usually houses. Focus on the car as a designed object however, and it all falls into place. Little else has shaped our society, environment and personal lives over the last century in quite the same way.
From the first production car in existence to an autonomous flying car, 15 exceptional automobiles never before seen together in the UK take centre stage. In true V&A style, fashions, products, graphics, photography and film create the backdrop, with over 250 objects on display in total.
Alongside the exhibition, the V&A is running an accompanying season of talks, workshops and courses for car curious visitors and enthusiasts alike. Highlights include a special screening of The Italian Job and self-driving car workshops geared towards young adults.
The car is the most important object of the 20th century.
