250th Summer Exhibition

Picture perfect

This year, the world’s largest and longest running open-submission art show celebrates its 250th anniversary. Held at the Royal Academy of Arts, the Summer Exhibition is a dynamic show that features a dizzying array of styles and media – from painting, photography and printmaking to film and sculpture. Proudly “open to all artists”, the show features an exciting mix of both established names and rising stars.

Everything you’ll see at the Summer Exhibition represents what is happening in the art world right now.

The Royal Academy of Arts

This year’s show is coordinated by Turner-Prize winning artist, Grayson Perry. Alongside the Royal Academy hanging committee, he has selected works that capture the art world today, whether abstract or traditional, conceptual or classical. Works are hung side-by-side and all are for sale, with the proceeds going to support the RA Schools.

With Grayson Perry at the helm, anticipation and expectations are running high.

The Culture Whisper

As well as the exhibition, there is a lively calendar of workshops, discussions and events including the world-famous Preview Party. Or, for something really out of the ordinary, make a date for Varnishing Day on 4 June. Historically, artists would visit the gallery to add final touches in situ. These days, it is a quirky celebration for the artists involved and includes a procession down Piccadilly led by a steel band. Whenever you choose to visit, this is an event that marches to the beat of its own drum.
