Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre
Al fresco theatre
First established in 1932, Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre is the oldest professional, permanent outdoor theatre in Britain. This summer, it is once again hosting a wonderful variety of shows, from Shakespeare and opera to smash-hit musicals. Here’s what you have to look forward to:
The Turn of the Screw: 22 - 30 June
This new staging of Benjamin Britten’s opera based on the classic Henry James novella weaves its outdoor setting into the staging, to chilling effect. The opera tells the tale of a young governess arriving at a new position at Bly House, an English country estate with a mysterious past. Unearthly apparitions begin to haunt her and her two young charges – determined to protect them, the governess sets out to uncover the truth.
As You Like It: 6 - 28 July
One of Shakespeare’s most popular comedies returns this summer to see the stage transformed into the mythical forest of Ardern, where a story of sibling rivalry, love and mistaken identity plays out. This warm, open-hearted production includes new music created by former Noah and the Whale frontman, Charlie Fink.
Little Shop of Horrors: 3 August – 15 September
Lovelorn flower shop assistant Seymour finds fame and fortune with his mysterious new plant – a talking Venus fly-trap with a peculiar (and growing) appetite. Can his bloodthirsty botanical friend help him win Audrey’s affections? Alan Menken’s “mean, green monster musical” closes the theatre’s summer season in style.
Planning your visit
Performances go ahead come rain or shine, so be sure to check the forecast before your visit. Bring sun protection for afternoon performances, raincoats for wet weather, and warm layers for cooler evenings. Make the most of the parkland setting with a pre-show picnic. Or enjoy a meal at one of the theatre restaurants, followed by a drink at the West End’s longest bar.
