Film4 Summer Screen at Somerset House
Picnic at the pictures
London’s most beautiful open-air cinema returns this August, for 14 nights of films screened under the night sky.
Set in the stunning Fountain Court of Somerset House, itself a popular film location, the atmosphere is magical. Londoners and visitors arrive to upbeat sets from local DJs as the sun goes down, then settle down to either their own picnics or the delicious food and drink available at the surrounding stalls.
All films play on London’s largest outdoor screen, with surround sound that truly immerses you in the cinematic experience. This year’s programme features cult classics such as Blue Velvet and Labyrinth, and newer favourites including Inception and Call Me By Your Name. And, for the first time, Film4 has commissioned a short film especially for the event. The result of a multi-disciplinary collaboration between film maker Ewan Jones Morris and performance artist Mel Brimfield, the film will screen before the main feature each evening.
There will also be talks, panel discussions and special events featuring some of the film industry’s greatest talent.
Watching a movie under the stars in Somerset House’s beautiful courtyard on a balmy summer evening is a near-perfect London experience.
