An Ideal Husband
An evening of Wildean wit
The Classic Spring Theatre Company’s Oscar Wilde Season continues with An Ideal Husband, a comedy that is often regarded as one of Wilde’s finest dramatic works.
The play opens in Robert Chiltern’s home, where a dinner party is being thrown. Chiltern is a respected member of the House of Commons and invites his family and genteel acquaintances for an evening of leisure. Government minister Chiltern’s political ambitions are threatened by Mrs Cheveley, who arrives in London with proof of his corrupt financial dealings. Desperate to save his reputation and the wellbeing of his marriage, Chiltern goes along with her plot. An Ideal Husband explores the typical themes of Victorian drama: marriage, love and forgiveness – all the while mocking them with Wilde’s razor-sharp wit.
The cast includes real-life father and son actors Edward and Freddie Fox, playing the roles of the Earl of Caversham and Lord Goring. Olivier Award-nominated actress Frances Barber will be playing the role of the scheming Mrs Cheveley.
